A Cocktail Bar on an Iconic Haight Street Corner

Some corners just have it. Haight and Clayton has been pulling people in off the street since the '70s — first as Achilles Heel, then for decades as Hobson's Choice, the beloved rum punch bar that became a neighborhood institution. You can read more about the history of the space going back to the late 1800’s here.

The Green Heron is the next chapter. We took over this space in 2025 and spent months bringing it back. New floors, new tables, a stained glass installation of the bar's namesake bird, and a fresh take on the space. The team behind The Red Tail in the Inner Sunset brings the same ethos here: thoughtful drinks, a welcoming room, and a bar that feels like it belongs to the neighborhood.

The main room is big, bright, and social — floor-to-ceiling corner windows look out at one of the best people-watching intersections in San Francisco, one block from Haight and Ashbury. Flat-screen TVs throughout make it a natural game day spot. No kitchen, but you're welcome to bring in food from the many great spots nearby.

Upstairs, a cozier lounge gives you a different pace — candlelit tables, a comfortable couch, and a view down into the bar below. There's also a back room when you need a little separation from the main floor.

Both rooms are available for private events — birthdays, buyouts, happy hours — and the whole bar can be reserved for the right occasion. Reach out to plan something.
