A Cocktail Bar on an Iconic Haight Street Corner
Some corners just have it. Haight and Clayton has been pulling people in off the street since the '70s — first as Achilles Heel, then for decades as Hobson's Choice, the beloved rum punch bar that became a neighborhood institution. The Green Heron is the next chapter.
We took over this space in 2025 and spent months bringing it back. New floors, new tables, a stained glass installation of the bar's namesake bird, and a fresh take on the space. The team behind The Red Tail in the Inner Sunset brings the same ethos here: thoughtful drinks, a welcoming room, and a bar that feels like it belongs to the neighborhood.
The main room is big, bright, and social — floor-to-ceiling corner windows look out at one of the best people-watching intersections in San Francisco, one block from Haight and Ashbury. Flat-screen TVs throughout make it a natural game day spot. No kitchen, but you're welcome to bring in food from the many great spots nearby.
Upstairs, a cozier lounge gives you a different pace — candlelit tables, a comfortable couch, and a view down into the bar below. There's also a back room when you need a little separation from the main floor.
Both rooms are available for private events — birthdays, buyouts, happy hours — and the whole bar can be reserved for the right occasion. Reach out to plan something.
Come as you are. Stay as long as you like.
